Famidaily is a day-by-day progression through the library of the Famicom, Nintendo's original cartridge-based game system. For 1041 days I'm documenting the entire library, one game at a time, explaining what the game is, how to play it, and providing cultural context for it.

In 2002, Namco produced a CGI animated film based on the classic game Xevious. It was shown for one week in a single theater, and then it was gone forever with no trace of it to be found. I came across the trailer for this inaccessible film, the most footage from the Xevious movie that anyone outside of Japan had ever seen. Skwoon
I saw the thumbnail and immediately felt your pain. I don't think Super Lode Runner or its sequel will make it onto my list of LR games I want to beat. At least not any time soon.
Hopefully in the other half of the systems lifespan things will get more interesting. Looking forward to it anyway! And I don`t have a clue on the bonus episode.. sudoku, or mahjong?
Love the channel. I was going to place my bet on a mah jong retrospective or a pachinko one, or even one on horse race betting simulation, but you said something we don't really talk much about... As such, I'm going with educational games!
You need a large stuffed Mario, or Donkey Kong doll, and you could make a sweater for them. For some odd reason I now want to listen to "Donkey Kong Goes Home" again, the song "No More Zoo For You" just popped back into my brain...
Half way! This is awesome. I’m still hopeful you’ll eventually do Super Famicom. I love the Super Famicom. 👍
Rereleases, huh? I was wondering how we could only be at the halfway point when the system is just about dead. I'm curious what else there is to say about these games.
While you say you are on a slower schedule now you still upload very regularly! The quality of your videos is so high and they are so informative
Criminal that this channel doesn’t get more views, since everything is so well-researched. I had no idea the disc system had this much variety on it (even if most of the library is kinda naff)
So... has the VHS tape been dumped online? I figure that's worth asking.
Yes, but it's probably only of interest if you're a Miho fan: ruclips.net/video/zcbyJhUwsQs/видео.html

Next can we have a Playstation decade series? 💎
Honestly I’ve found this disc system retrospective a lot more interesting than I thought I would; a lot of these games seem unknown for a reason.. mainly because they don’t seem that great… but I have loved catching up with every episode just like Famidaily!!
Congrats on halfway! I have a feeling the next documentation projects gonna be on the supervision..
Whoa, we're halfway there Whoa-oh, living on a Disk Sys
Halfway there! Started watching at episode 13!
thank you for making this channel, recently discovered it and its one of the most binge-able and interesting channels on youtube. and for someone like me born in 91 and missed on the NES/famicom era, ive discovered a TON of awesome games :DD
Oh, shit, that's the girl from Sailor Suit Rebel Alliance! I thought I recognized her from somewhere.
Congrats. When you finish this project you could make a game catalogue of some other lesser known Japanese system, MSX maybe?
Is it just me, or does the cover picture have a totally wrong vibe? It doesn't feel romantic so much as "the call is coming from inside the house!"
The end of this year means you'll have covered everything there is to know about Famicom games. That's a hell of an accomplishment. We're rooting for you!
Come to think of it, I've never really thought about the history of puzzle games. I mean, my brain can't go back farther than sokoban.
10 countries? I haven’t even been to 10 cities in that timeframe. Great job with the project, looking forward to the back half of the year.
This felt like the bizarro world version of Tim Rogers’ video.
I've just found your channel so no idea if you have already: but please cover these Idea Factory games. There's pretty much no information (and hardly any footage) on a lot of them
Every game not named Mario party based on that genre Sugoroku
I gotta agree with you. I'd argue maybe a couple dozen games were decent/good at most. The best games were either the classics everyone knows, or some lesser known JP-exclusive Konami/Nintendo games. Too bad, but they can't all be winners.
Why does the sprite at the end of Thexder look kind of like Minmei from the Macross game?
This series has been scratching the same itch as Dr. Sparkle's Chrontendo series for me, so I'm happy to see it all - even the junk, lol. Glad to hear you're doing a good job of pacing yourself though; the series on Famitsu's worst-reviewed games HAS been quite interesting too, so you do a great job of balancing those side videos with this project imho. Always happy to see what you're up to whenever you drop a new video, so congrats on getting this far and here's hoping the rest of the series has more surprising gems than not, eh?
Halfway through the project and it feels like we've seen what FDS already has to offer. I really hope we see some diamonds in the rough for the latter half. Nintendo still has those murder mystery games coming up and such.
I would think the better ones would come in later on. I know bio miracle bokutte upa is a favorite.
Yeah, the Famicom Detective Club games were remade for the Switch. Those remakes are really good for Japanese learners, because of furigana and full voice acting. Anyhow, I think that the first half of FDS's library is better. More hidden gems and classics everyone knows. 1988 onward has fewer of those in my opinion, and 1989 pretty much marks the system's death.
I bought and uploaded the prize VHS tape years ago. Search "アイドルホットライン中山美穂のトキメキハイスクール 「特製ビデオテープ」" on Internet Archive (and any copy that you might find on YT or something is from my upload of it.)
I'm always fascinating to see Japanese-exclusive obscure oddities. Congrats for entering the second-half into the Disk System's lifespan mate!
I really admire the drive you have to chronicle an entire game library like this. Seeing games and their design from all angles on given old hardware fascinates me. I do love the side projects as well though; I found you through the Spectral Tower video and shared your curiosity about the lowest-rated games in Famitsu. Best of luck to all of your future projects.
Congrats on the halfway point! I've been enjoying this series, it's got me to try some games like Ginga Densho, Zanac, and Famicom Golf Japan Course. There's a few I've still been meaning to do that has been covered like Deep Dungeon, Eggerland, Ai Senshi Nicol, Falsion and many more. I'm pretty curious what the 2nd half will be like, I recognize some games here. Some episodes I'm looking forward to will be ones like Fire Rock, Halley Wars, and that final game starring Disk-kun. Guess I'll just cut it short for now for my comment. Thank you for all the content as always!
appreciate the update! it's been a wild ride, to be sure. definitely some FDS games I may have to fire up in an emulator one of these days. curious to find out what that new project video will wind up being, and whatever's next for the anthology stuff.
Glad to hear we get a Mario Party-less _sugoroku_ retrospective next.
Congratulations on reaching the halfway point!

I'm so damn curious about what that teaser is for now lol. But I feel like I have no chance at guessing what it is
Congratulation !!
what's after this project?,i hope it's megadaily(famidaily but mega drive)
My fingers are crossed for something PC-Engine related. That console fits into that "big in Japan, not so much elsewhere" that could make for a really interesting dive given RndStranger's focus and approach.
@@aducharme01 but the nes/famicom was huge outside of japan too, plus, most pc engine games are too expensive
I have a plan for the next big project and I've been gathering materials for it but I'm holding off on any announcement until I get closer. Naturally, it will be focused on a Japanese platform, but because there's no functional difference between that and the international versions, my scope is going to open up a bit.
@@RndStranger game boy stuff (not all the games but I know you wanted to do some gb stuff)
That’s the most condensed explanation of the whole Famicom Tantei Club + Itoi Shigesato lineage I have ever seen haha. I think you could have elaborated a little more on Sakamoto Yoshio’s and Itoi Shigesato’s involvement! Although I guess you could (did?) save that for the Famicom Tantei Club video.
Congratulations on getting to the halfway mark! I'm in the same boat as you in regards to the quality of releases we've seen on the Disk System thus far and outside of the hardware becoming obsolete shortly after release the lack of compelling software is what truly killed the platform. Why get an expensive disk drive add-on when you could get cartridge games that are better than what released on disk? Sure you're spending more on those cartridge games than on those disk cards but you'll certainly get better experiences without the add-on. I'm not shocked that the last few years of the Disk System amounted to re-releases of old cartridge games since that was one heck of a way to keep those older games in circulation for cheap. As for your future plans, no matter what I will be tuning into what you have in-store for us viewers. Your documentation has been the biggest contribution to spreading awareness of these specific games and software that hardly anyone else would even try talking about.
Of course you're not going to talk about the one series that people might know. You already covered Pachiokun during Famidaily.
I'm with you there with how many of these disks are duds, and the thing is I'm actually a fan of the weird non-games on the system as well, and I still wouldn't be able to justify this add-on if I was a Japanese kid in the 80s. So many of games are just rereleases of cartridge games, which is super disappointing. It's always exciting to see a new video from you though.
It's been a real eye opener. There seems to be a lot less of a middle for the FDS. There's a few stone cold classics that defined gaming for decades to come, and then a lot of stuff that is just kind of... Mediocre or bad looking even compared to regular Famicom in 87. There are some hidden gems and interesting second tier games but a lot less than I had imagined. Kinda like the N64 library
Love the ones with an interesting backstory! reminds me of the likes of 'teddy boy blues' over at sega they also had an idol pop star tie-in, iirc. and congratulations on the half-way mark I can't believe it's been going this long.
Can we see your cats?
They're in other retrospective videos, like the one showing the entire Famicom cartridge collection.

Was looking forward to this episode, one of my favorite FDS games. Not too interested in dating sim games but I love the soundtrack, the art and that it's an adventure game not about a murder case.
You're doing great. Keep going. You got this. Also yeah, it's incredible to see how the disk system seems to have faceplanted hard.
Famidaily was really good for me, especially during the worst of Covid. Thank you so much
Congrats on getting halfway through the FDS library! This is such an interesting game for the system, so unique. It even has that whole real-world interaction going on with those (now no longer working) phone call messages, something they would try over here in the US with Roger Rabbit on the NES. I have a feeling that I would have been hyped to try this game if I saw it as a kid, but I definitely would not be allowed to use the phone along with it, so I'd be missing out on a major aspect.
I heard nobody bothered to save a recording of the Roger Rabbit phone calls, either! Now I know you can find recordings of the Treasure Island Dizzy helpline and at least one instance of that silly Alfred Chicken campaign, so apparently they care about preserving this stuff somewhat in the UK.
